POLICEMAN IN ICU AFTER ASSAULT BY 30 PEOPLE

MELAKA, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- A police constable was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Melaka Hospital after he was assaulted by a group of 30 people at a restaurant in Ayer Keroh early yesterday.

Constable Mohd Fairus Shafie who was having supper at the restaurant between midnight and 2am suffered serious head injuries.

Melaka police chief SAC I Datuk Mazlan Mansor said Mohd Fairus, 22, was beaten up by a group of 30 people, some using crash helmets.

He said Mohd Fairus from Kota Tinggi, Johor, who was attached to the Melaka CID division was off duty at the time.

Fifteen people aged 18-42, three of them injured, had been remanded for one week to assist investigation under Section 148 of Penal Code.

Mazlan said police had yet to establish the motive for the assault and urged those with information to assist by calling Melaka Tengah police at 06-2842222. (Bernama)
